04-Feb Negombo - our first day in Sri Lanka

Oruwa

Negombo Beach
We woke up on Independence Day in Sri Lanka, a holiday for many locals. After having breakfast we were ready to explore the area. Walking along Negombo Beach, the fine gritty sand felt good and we enjoyed the warmth of the sunshine. We helped some local men launch an Oruwa, the traditional fishing boat - now offering tours to tourists, into the water.

It was 27c and we had walked quite a distance, so we returned to the hotel for a swim in the pool then found a lunch-spot just north of our hotel. As it was a national holiday, there were no sales of alcohol, but Arnie, one of the other hotel guests had stocked up and he shared a couple of beers with us, as we sat on the patio. A late afternoon nap, turned into a full nights sleep - for almost 12 hours!
