Opting to hire a tuk-tuk to take us east, instead of the overcrowded bus - which was the only other option, we had splurged a little for the 5,000 LKR fare. It was a very enjoyable way to travel and see the panoramic views of the country as we drove through it, with a good breeze keeping us cool on the 3 hour trip. Our destination, The Bella Nilaveli Beach Resort which was also a bit of a splurge (at $45 CDN /night with breakfast) but it was tropical luxury, right on the beach with its own swimming pool and our thatched cottage featured an outdoor bathroom. Dasun, the guest relations manger, waiter, bartender and kitchen assistant made our stay there very comfortable.

We walked north along the beach for about 5km, with one of the many stray dogs that inhabit Sri Lanka following us for quite away before she got distracted by something in the underbrush of the palm trees. We took a tuk-tuk back to the hotel and had a swim before dinner, planning the next day over a fruit juice spiked with Arak, a local brew made from coconut that we had brought with us from Jaffna.
