08-Feb Slow train to Anuradhapura

Sri Lankan breakfast
We were packed up and ready to go before our last delicious breakfast prepared by Hilda the housekeeper. We headed to the station and boarded the 09:30am local train to Anuradhapura.

rice fields
It was a much slower journey than the express we had taken north a few days before, but it was interesting to lazily gaze out the window as the coconut palmed countryside rolled by. Our 2nd class compartment had all the windows open and ceiling fans blowing, but it was still a bit hot and sticky, especially on the last part of out 4.5 hour trip.

stairs to Mihintale temple
We arranged a late afternoon pickup with the tuk-tuk driver who took us from the station to the guest house. He had suggested taking us to the Mihintale Temple and Ambasthala Dagoba for sunset. It was hot climbing all the steps, but well worth it for the view and our first look at Sri Lanka's ancient history. There were almost as many Macaque monkeys as tourists there and so many photo opportunities. On the return, our driver dropped us in town, so we could pick up a few items and Jordan was happy to find a ripe soursop at the local fruit market.
