Spending the morning wandering the commercial area of Anuradhapura, browsing the vast selection of fruit and vegetables at the weekly farmers market, we sampled many flavours new and familiar to us. We stopped for refreshments at the Banana Café and Les tried a Falooda milkshake (more about those in the days to come). Then a visit to a branch of the Bank of Ceylon to stock up on Sri Lankan rupees (LKR) - the exchange rate roughly 1000 LKR = $7.50 CDN. Sri Lanka, while having a closed currency, deals mainly in cash, with very few business accepting any other form of payment.

At 1:00pm we set off for an afternoon tour by tuk-tuk of some of the ruins of Anuradhapura: Vessagriya, Sri Maha Bohdi, the Royal Palace, Temple of the Tooth and Jetavanarama Dagoba.

Beware of crocodiles! |
The thunder clouds started to roll in as we finished up the tour and we were dropped off at the Ceylon Grand Tourist Hotel, across the street from our guest house, for supper. We watched the lightning and torrential rain as we ate, the skies darkening over the lake, obliterating the views of the hills beyond. One of the thunder cracks sounded like a car had exploded out on the street - we had never heard any storm quite so loud.
