3rd class |
Leaving the easy-paced east coast behind us, we caught the 11:22am train from Triconmalee to Gal Oya (3rd class only) and we had the carriage almost to ourselves for the 2 hour journey. Gal Oya is mainly a rail junction and appeared to be in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, there was a tuk-tuk waiting for the 30 minute transfer to Habarana and we set off through the lush countryside.

Pidurangala |
We picked up a rental scooter and after checking into our guest house, we had a delicious lunch of vegetable kottu, which we hadn't had a chance to try yet. Afterwards, we zipped off to Pidurangala on the scooter and climbed the rock for a fantastic view of Sigiriya: the Lion Rock. Getting back into town as darkness fell, we picked up some refreshments along the way; bottled water, Lion beer and a mango flavoured Arak and we headed back to the guest house for the evening.
