06-Feb Jaffna and the north coast

Tamil friends
We ate breakfast with our fellow guests; a couple from France, a couple from The Netherlands and a fellow from Australia. We rented a scooter from the hotel owner and set off for the northern tip of the island, meeting islanders along the way, who smiled, waved and often wanted to chat and find out where we were from.

Sakkottai Cape
Heading north on the A9 towards Kankesanthurai lighthouse then, following the coastal road towards Point Pedro, stopping at Sakkottai Cape, then southwards past the beaches of Tumpalai and Manalkadu.

where are we?

Chempiyanpaitu Lagoon
Egrets
The road took us along the full length of Chempiyanpaitu Lagoon, which supports numerous migratory birds. At the southern end, we crossed a land bridge and rejoined the A9 at Soranpattu and rode back towards Jaffna.

Kandaswamy Kovil
rice & curry
We ate a fantastic meal of rice and curry at Nallur Bhavan on Temple Rd before returning to the hotel, parking the scooter, we walked into Jaffna and visited the old fort, watching the sunset from this historic building.
