18-Feb Hiking Adams Peak

We set off just before 8:00am on a clear and sunny morning. Adams peak is 2243m (7359ft), above sea level, the ascent being around 1400m (4600 ft), with reportedly 5,500 steps of irregular height. Passing the many vendors, selling trinkets, colder weather clothing and snacks. The first part of the trail was almost wall-to-wall kiosks, but as we climbed higher they started to thin out.

The temperature was pleasant and the trail wasn't too crowded yet. A steady gain in altitude, up the many steps, made for a gentle climb for us, there were many older and less physically abled Sri Lankans also making the climb and the crowds got thicker as we neared the summit. The last hour it got quite bottle-necked, as the monastery straddling the mountain top was not big enough for large crowds. It was hot in the midday sun and we were glad with each step forward to finally reach our goal.

We rang the bell in the monastery (once for each time a personal summit had ben made) and started on the much easier return, stopping just a couple of times for a water break. it had taken us about 4.5 hours in total, almost 2 hours more than expected, due to the holiday crowds.
