16-Feb The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya

Kandy station
Just down the hill from our guest house was the Kandy railway station where we caught the train for the 20 minute ride to Peradeniya, for the low price of 20 LKR (for two).

We wandered the vast expanse of greenery and studied the variety of tropical vegetation in these well laid out gardens, including the giant bamboo of Burma, which can grow at an impressive rate of 30cm a day! The Botanical Gardens are beautiful, well worth a full days visit.

We ate lunch at the restaurant on site, which was well timed for a midday torrential downpour. Afterwards, we spent a good part of the afternoon wandering the rest of the gardens before catching the train back to Kandy. In town we looked at the Temple of the Tooth, had a beer at the Royal bar and walked through the busy streets, the twitter of birds roosting in the trees almost drowning out the traffic noise - very Hitchcockesque.
