An early alarm woke us for our 5:30am pick up and we were on our way by car to Wilpattu National Park, transferring to a safari truck closer to the park. The driver stopped, so the three of us could buy some breakfast items to take with us on the tour, as we would shortly be in the park and driving around for the next 3 hours or so.

While we didn't see the much advertised leopards and sloth bear, we did spot an elephant, some wild buffalo, a boar, spotted deer, sambar deer, monitor lizard, macaque monkeys, and eagle, a peacock and many waterfowl including a painted stork. As we exited the park on the red soil roads, puddled from the heavy rains the night before, the skies cleared and it warmed up quickly.

Returning to our car and driver, we headed back to town, passing chili peppers and brown rice, spread along the roadside, which closed one of the lanes to traffic while the drying process took place. We wandered through the fruit market again and made arrangements to get to the east coast the next day.
