19-Feb A tuk-tuk through tea country

Our tuk-tuk driver picked us up at 8:00am for the 4 hour drive to Kaduwela, a very scenic trip through tea growing country. The narrow roads hugging the mountainside, overlooking the deep valley below - should we have worried that our driver stopped at a roadside shrine for a quick prayer? We stopped at a small temple in a village for refreshment, a warm ayurvedic drink that tasted like green beans.

It got warmer as we descended towards the coast and the bus station in Kaduwela. We were just in time to catch an express bus, which would take us south to Matara. The 1 hour 45 minute trip along the toll highway was fast and uncrowded.

From the Matara bus station we took a tuk-tuk to Polhena Beach, where we would stay for the next two nights. We headed to the beach right after checking in, it would be our first time swimming in the warm Indian Ocean since our arrival and we stayed there until it was time to get changed for supper.

Bobs Roti's
We ate at a local Bob Marley themed restaurant and had vegetable roti and fresh fruit juice. We picked up our chilled beer from the room and went back to the beach, watching the full moon rise, shimmering on the water, which still had many locals playing in the surf. The stray dogs were extra frisky in the cooler evening air. A couple of young men came over and chatted with us for a few minutes, curious as to where we had traveled from. This was so often the way with many locals - so friendly and curious, happy to have visitors to their beautiful island home.
